In 1752, the commander of the presidio, Juan Bautista de Anza, was ordered to open a new route to California. His journey from Tubac Az to San Francisco is immortalized as the de Anza Trail, part of which travels along the Santa Cruz River from Tubac to the mission at Tumacacori.
